The project consists of a Seawater Reverse Osmosis desalination treatment plant with a production capacity of 450,000 m3 per day, seawater intake and outfall facilities, 380KV Gas Insulated Substation, and 65km Overhead electrical transmission (electrical special facilities), 41 km water transmission line and water storage tanks with total capacity of 1.24 MN m3 (water special facilities). The project company – Yanbu International Water Company, signed a 25-year Water Purchase Agreement (WPA) with the offtaker – Saudi Water Partnership Company.
The project is the first PPP project implemented under BOO that includes a seawater desalination plant, a water transmission pipeline system, storage facilities and 10 MW solar power plant. Water special facilities will be transferred to SWCC, while the electrical special facilities will be transferred to the National grid upon reaching the commercial operation date (COD). The plant is located in Al Rais in Al-Madinah region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The project achieved financial close in March 2021 and is scheduled to achieve COD in November 2023. The project is financed through a combination of local and international commercial banks on a non-recourse basis.
